Domain Names
A Domain name is like your postal address - it's your online website address.
eg: , jones.com.au, jones.com, jones.net.au, etc, are all examples of "domain names".
Here's how Domain Names work
A Domain Name is generally broken up into 3 sections: "www" / "sitename" / ".com.au" (or similar)
"www"
The "www" you see in front of a domain name tells your computer to look for a particular web address on the World Wide Web or the Internet, as we all know it. Nowadays, you may not even need to type that into your web browser as it is almost a 'given' that that is the prefix you are after.
"sitename"
The actual sitename of a domain name is often the same as or closely linked to a business name in many cases. However that is not always the case, nor does it have to be. There is no limit to what this part of a domain name may be 'except' that this AND the final part of the full domain name together (i.e. .com.au, .com, .net.au etc) may never be the same as another on the global internet system. eg there cannot be 2 jones.com.au's or there cannot be 2 of mybusiness.com. Detailed processes are in place globally to ensure there are no conflicts of names.
".com.au" / ".com" / ".net.au" etc
The final part of a domain name usually indicates whether your domain is a global one, based in australia, based in the UK or similar. An Australian commercial domain name is often given a ".com.au" ending - one in New Zealand may be ".co.nz" etc. The ".com" suffix is often considered to be USA based or a global name.
